Moderate Air Quality Alert Issued for Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda is currently under a moderate air quality alert due to elevated levels of particulate matter, resulting from the seventeenth surge of Saharan Dust this year.

The alert is set to remain in effect until Tuesday.

According to the Met office, the air quality index has risen to between 51 and 75, placing the alert at Level II.

This level indicates that while the air quality is generally acceptable, there are potential health concerns for sensitive individuals.

Those most at risk include people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, individuals with heart disease, the elderly, and young children. For these groups, the presence of particulate matter could lead to limited health impacts, although the overall risk remains low for the general population.

The Met Office advises that while the air quality does not pose a significant threat to most people, it is prudent for sensitive groups to take precautions. Active children, adults, and individuals with respiratory issues should avoid prolonged outdoor activities to minimize any potential health risks.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about air quality conditions and take appropriate measures to protect their health during this period.
