The government is ramping up efforts to combat gang-related violence, which it claims is instilling fear among citizens and residents in Antigua and Barbuda.

Information Minister Melford Nicholas revealed that the 2drilly gang, Grays Farm Killers, and other groups have been identified as threats.

The government plans to deploy police resources to tackle these gangs.

“We are going to become familiar with these groups. They are at war with each other, and while the origin is unclear, it appears to be affecting some of our secondary schools,” Minister Nicholas said.

In a recent national address, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the formation of a specialized guns and gangs suppression unit to address the destabilizing impact of these gangs.

The government will introduce anti-gang and juvenile curfew legislation aimed at curbing juvenile criminal behavior and protecting minors from predators.

The gang suppression strategy will also include counseling, public education, and awareness programs in schools.

Additionally, alternative rehabilitation programs will be implemented in penal institutions to reduce recidivism.

Minister Nicholas further disclosed that technology will be used to track down violators, particularly in response to a threatening 911 call made against the police.

“We will find them, and the punishment will be as severe as the law allows. With proper court guidance, the police will request information from telecommunications operators, who are required to provide it promptly,” the Minister stated.
