Alleged Witness Bribery Attempt by Public Figure Comes to Light

You can now listen to Antigua News articles!

A controversial situation has emerged involving a prominent public figure in Antigua and Barbuda, who is currently facing a minor criminal charge related to an incident from a few years ago.

A voice recording has begun to circulate and it suggests an attempt to influence a witness’s testimony.

The recording captures a conversation between a female witness in an active court case and a senior police officer.

In this dialogue, the officer informs the witness that the defendant, a well-known individual, is willing to provide an “envelope” if she testifies.

In the recording, the officer conveys that the defendant “just wants to know that people who have been there and see what happened will just say exactly what happened.”

Though he may not have been asking her to lie, it can still be considered as a form of witness tampering or perversion of the course of justice.

The witness’s response, as captured in the recording, indicates her refusal of any monetary offer.

She explicitly states her intention to testify truthfully, regardless of any proposed incentives.

The trial already ended and the said witness has already given evidence

However, the case is still pending with the defense preparing to file no case submissions.

The prosecution is expected to respond to these submissions.
