Brace for extremely hot conditions for the next few days, Met Office says

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services will be issuing a heat watch for the coming days.
The alert indicates that excessive heat is possible from Saturday through Monday, with the most critical hours being between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm each day.
Forecasters predict that the heat index, also known as the “feels-like” temperature, could reach or exceed 38°C (100°F).
This combination of high temperatures, light winds, and relatively high humidity creates a potentially hazardous situation, especially for vulnerable populations.
The meteorological service emphasizes that while extreme heat poses risks to everyone, certain groups are at higher risk.
These include the elderly, young children, lactating mothers, individuals with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, athletes, homeless people, and low-income earners.
The officials warn that prolonged exposure to such high temperatures can lead to various heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, exhaustion, fainting, cramps, rash, and edema. In severe cases, these conditions can result in long-term health problems or even death.
Residents are urged to take precautions during this period:
- Stay cool and hydrated
- Check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors
- Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours
- Seek medical advice if on medication or with pre-existing health conditions
The meteorological service advises that this heat watch may be upgraded to a warning as conditions develop.
They recommend that the public stay informed about updates and be prepared for excessive heat in the coming days.
