Antigua and Barbuda Under Week-Long Heat Watch
The Meteorological Office has placed the country under a Heat Watch for an entire week, starting from September 5 through September 12.
This advisory comes as the twin-island nation braces for exceptionally high temperatures that could pose significant health risks to residents and visitors alike.
The Heat Watch will be in effect daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, during which time the heat index, commonly referred to as the “feels-like” temperature, is expected to reach or exceed a sweltering 38°C (100°F).
This elevated heat index is a result of a combination of high temperatures, light winds, and high humidity levels.
Officials are particularly concerned about the impact on sensitive groups within the population. Those at highest risk include the elderly, young children, pregnant and nursing mothers, individuals with chronic health conditions (especially those with breathing or heart issues), outdoor workers, the homeless, and low-income individuals who may lack access to adequate cooling.
The extreme heat can lead to a range of heat-related illnesses, some of which can be severe. These include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, fainting, heat cramps, heat rash, and edema(swelling). While these conditions are preventable, they can result in serious long-term health problems or, in extreme cases, death if not addressed promptly.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay vigilant and take immediate action if they or someone around them exhibits symptoms of heat-related illness. These symptoms include dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing, and extreme thirst.
Local authorities are advising the public to take necessary precautions during this period. These may include staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
