Labour Minister responds to Four-Day Week Request

Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin

Labour Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin has provided the government position on the implementation of a four-day work week saying the Gaston Browne-led administration cannot at this point entertain such discussion.

“There are many varied things to consider, rate of pay, effect it will have on people’s pay, bargaining agreement between workers and their employers. There are many variables. It is premature even to fathom such a thought,” Benjamin said

He assured employers and employees the government has not considered it and it is not a stated policy.

Minister Benjamin went on to indicate while many countries have successfully completed the pilot, the same concept may not be appropriate for small countries like Antigua and Barbuda.

“We may someday perhaps in the future consider that situation but as of today I don’t think we should even think about that policy at all,” he said.

President of the People’s Trade Union Ralph Potter noted this weekend that a four day week is among issues he was looking to discuss in holding with labour department officials.

  3. Four-day work week. Soon people will want to remain at home and get paid. The public servants are already on a NO day work week where they take tax payers money and fool around at work. They take weeks to do a one-day job and waste investors’ time. PLEASE!
