A group calling itself the People’s Union has officially launched its campaign, identifying several crucial areas for immediate reform to enhance industrial relations and promote national development.
In a bold statement during the launch event, union leaders outlined their commitment to advocating for significant initiatives to improve working conditions and workforce benefits.
The People’s Union has outlined several key initiatives aimed at improving worker benefits and rights. They propose the establishment of a National Retirement Age along with associated benefits, the implementation of a National Living Wage, and the introduction of National Paternity Leave.
Additionally, they advocate for a thorough review and modernization of the Workmen’s Compensation Act, as well as the adoption of a Four-day Work Week.
Earlier this year, Hon. Sir. Steadroy Benjamin, Attorney General and Minister of Labour, announced government intentions to establish a national retirement age.
In a further update, Minister Benjamin expressed that the government is actively considering the introduction of paternity leave for public sector employees.
During his recent Labour Day address, he reaffirmed the commitment to transition from a minimum wage framework to a living wage model and pledged to legislate paternity leave, while also exploring the viability of a four-day work week.
Additionally, the Workmen’s Compensation Act is set to undergo a comprehensive review, aiming to modernize the legislation that has remained unchanged for decades.
Sir. Steadroy emphasized the necessity to revisit the Labour Code, which has been in effect since 1975 and remains the only legislation of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean.
The People’s Union has welcomed the government’s recognition of these pressing issues and its intention to take decisive action.
The union plans to engage in discussions with Sir. Steadroy Benjamin to address further legislation, notably the creation of a Health and Safety Act to improve employment conditions.
As The People’s Union looks ahead, they express optimism for meaningful collaboration with all stakeholders in their efforts to cultivate a national labour environment characterized by equity, productivity, justice, and an enhanced quality of life for all citizens.
The launch marks a critical step toward addressing longstanding issues within the workforce and signals a renewed commitment from both the government and the union to prioritize the rights and welfare of workers across Antigua and Barbuda.
So who are the peoples union
I thought the same. Who are they and what are they about!
National retirement age should be 60. And pension and/or social security should start immediately after turning 60.
People need to enjoy life after work and not wait until they are close to dying to enjoy retirement.
We need to do better!!!
Very poorly written article. All I’m seeing in this piece is Sir Steadroy Benjamin over and over…. Up to now not a word on who the principles of The Peoples Union are…
I’m all for the health and safety act. Too many employees have their staff working in conditions that are really not conducive and that needs to be addressed
The people’s union smells like a political group. We may need a new party since UPP dead
