Airlines are showing interest in operating flights to the new BIA

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez

The recently inaugurated Barbuda International Airport has garnered significant attention from airlines in just a few days since its opening.

Tourism and Aviation Minister Charles Max Fernandez revealed this during his appearance on the Browne and Browne show on Pointe FM Radio last Saturday.

The airport, which opened to great fanfare last Thursday, has obtained certification and a license from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority.

Additionally, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has assigned the airport its own code, TAPB.

Fernandez disclosed that WinAir has already submitted an application to operate flights to the island, and he foresees more airlines following suit due to the promising prospects.

He emphasized that this development signals a significant opportunity for the island and expressed optimism about American Airlines’ potential engagement following the runway extension.

In light of the anticipated increase in flights to the island, the tourism minister also urged smaller properties in Barbuda to consider expanding their accommodations, highlighting the potential role of short-term rentals in the future.
