Antigua and Barbuda has been chosen to host the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The decision was taken during the Executive Session of the ongoing 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says it represents a historic milestone for us as the smallest nation to hold this esteemed event
“The 2026 CHOGM in St. John’s will provide an exceptional opportunity for Antigua and Barbuda to highlight the island’s distinctive culture, warm hospitality, and forward-thinking vision. In addition to the main summit, we will organize several important forums that will bring together youth, women, business leaders, and civil society,” he said
Adding, “this reflects our dedication to fostering inclusive dialogue on issues that resonate with the diverse membership of the Commonwealth, ensuring that every voice is acknowledged and valued,”.
The selection of Antigua and Barbuda as the host for CHOGM 2026 signifies a crucial moment for both the region and the nation’s ongoing leadership within the Commonwealth.
The event is set to emphasize the unique challenges and opportunities encountered by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), particularly regarding climate change, international trade, and economic innovation.
According to PM Browne, this gathering will provide the twin-island nation with an opportunity to demonstrate its strong dedication to the Commonwealth’s shared values, as well as its commitment to fostering unity, collaboration, and sustainable development within the Commonwealth community.
Meanwhile Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez highlighted that this announcement represents a significant advancement for the nation’s tourism sector.
He extended a heartfelt invitation to all Commonwealth members and their citizens to participate in what is expected to be a landmark event for both the Commonwealth and the global community.
“The country anticipates creating a memorable and impactful experience for all participants, enhancing connections and inspiring collaboration for a prosperous future,” he remarked.
The High Commission of Antigua and Barbuda in London, led by High Commissioner Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, will act as the central point of contact for CHOGM 2026.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is a biennial summit where leaders from the 56 Member States convene to discuss and promote shared values, development initiatives, and collaborative solutions to global challenges.
