Flash Flood Warning Issued for Barbuda

17 November 2024 - 10:00

A flash flood warning is in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Barbuda until midday today, Sunday.

This warning indicates that moderate to major flooding is occurring or is imminent in the affected areas.

Flash flooding can be very dangerous. If you are located in low-lying or flood-prone areas, please move to higher ground immediately.

Residents living along streams, creeks, or other vulnerable regions should take immediate precautions to protect their lives and property.

Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth, whether on foot or in a vehicle. Just one foot of flowing water can sweep a car off the road. Exercise extreme caution when encountering flooded roads.

If you’re unsure, make the smart choice: turn around, don’t drown. A pre-frontal trough over the northeastern Caribbean is influencing the weather in the Leeward Islands, particularly Barbuda, resulting in periodic heavy showers and thunderstorms.

An estimated 4 inches of rain have already fallen on the northern to eastern side of the island, with an additional inch expected in the next two hours.

Therefore, moderate to major flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas is anticipated.
