The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) is significantly expanding its dialysis capabilities to address the growing needs of kidney disease patients in Antigua and Barbuda.

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph has announced that 11 additional dialysis units are currently being installed by overseas technicians, supplementing the existing facilities. “This is a giant step,” Sir Molwyn stated, noting that the expansion will help address the current waiting list and ensure patients receive full dialysis treatment.

The minister highlighted that the expansion plans extend beyond the current installation, with buildings at the former Holberton Hospital compound being converted to accommodate approximately 90 dialysis units. This substantial increase in capacity aims to not only serve the local population but also cater to international patients.

“There are some Caribbean islands where people cannot even get dialysis services,” Sir Molwyn emphasized, underscoring the regional significance of this expansion. He also pointed out the potential tourism benefits, noting that enhanced dialysis services could attract visitors who require regular treatment during their stay.

The expansion marks a significant advancement in the nation’s healthcare infrastructure, positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a potential regional hub for dialysis services.
