Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez says the yachting industry continues to thrive in Antigua, with projected arrivals reaching an impressive 19,000 for the upcoming season.
This surge reaffirms the yachting sector’s significance as a cornerstone of the island’s tourism product, drawing visitors from around the globe.
He tells Antigua.news that the government remains committed to maintaining its status as a premier sailing destination, hosting a series of high-profile events that attract yachting enthusiasts.
Key events include the renowned Antigua Charter Yacht Show, the RORC races, the Atlantic Races (formerly known as the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge), the Oyster World Rally, the Salty Dogs Rally, and the celebrated Antigua Sailing Week.
These marquee races not only showcase the beauty of the Caribbean but also bolster the local economy through increased tourism.
In addition to promoting yachting tourism, Antigua is dedicated to fostering inclusivity within the sport. The ongoing Sailability program targets disabled individuals and youth in the community, offering them the opportunity to learn sailing skills while ensuring the sustainability of the sport for future generations.
A noteworthy initiative in collaboration with Salty Dogs is a fundraising campaign aimed at providing scholarships for young Antiguans and Barbudans aspiring to work on mega yachts.
The first recipient of this initiative, Ishmael Johnathan Auguiste, has successfully completed his studies at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), graduating as a certified Marine Systems Technician. This scholarship, valued at $40,000 USD, represents a significant step toward opening doors for local talent in the yachting industry.
Furthermore, the Guadeloupe Ferry service is set to expand, with nine scheduled calls for 2024, a substantial increase compared to just three calls in 2023. This development is expected to enhance connectivity and offer more travel options for both locals and tourists.
As Antigua continues to embrace its rich maritime heritage and invest in its future, the yachting industry stands poised for further growth, encouraging local participation and fostering international relations. The combination of high-profile events, community initiatives, and improved ferry services highlights a promising future for yachting in the region.
