Nation bids farewell to Asot Michael

19 December 2024 - 14:54

It was a day of celebration as hundreds flocked to the Holy Family Cathedral to reflect on the life of longstanding politician Asot Michael.

Family, friends, colleagues, dignitaries, and constituents all rubbed shoulders in the sanctuary, a testament to Michael’s immeasurable reach in adapting and relating to all circles of society.

He was remembered as a “man for the people”.

His love for serving others was great, but none greater than his love for family.

“Your lessons, your love, and your belief in me have shaped the person I am today. You raised me to dream big, give generously, and serve purposefully. While the world has lost a brilliant leader and a generous soul, I have lost a second father,” his niece, Marissa mentioned in tribute.

Several tributes were made in song and speech for a man who loved deeply.

It was a similar feeling of comradery that was felt only two days prior at the Parham Basketball Court during a candlelight vigil.

Throughout the program, guests paid their respects during the viewing of the body, which remained open to allow mourners a final opportunity to say goodbye.

Guests paid their respects throughout the program, and many left in tears reflecting on a man who cared so much for the people.

Michael who has been the Parliamentary Representative in St. Peters for more than two decades was killed in his home last month in Dry Hill sending shock waves across the country, region, and international waters.

A man has since confessed to the crime.

Michael became the first-ever independent candidate to win his seat in Antigua, a feat he achieved in the last general elections.

He was also a former Tourism and Energy Minister.
