Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced a significant commitment to education and public health, unveiling plans to invest EC$200 million in the expansion of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus.
This investment is anticipated to unlock new opportunities for higher education and position Antigua and Barbuda competitively on the global stage.
“Education is the cornerstone of our nation’s progress,” stated the Prime Minister. “This initiative is aimed at fostering a well-educated workforce that can adapt to the challenges of an evolving economy.”
In alignment with educational advancements, the government prioritizes healthcare improvements by establishing a specialized cardiac unit and a dedicated renal transplant facility.
Local residents will also benefit from the anticipated reopening of an upgraded cancer center incorporating advanced stem cell and cancer therapies, thus enhancing the overall quality of medical care.
The administration also focuses on sustainable land development policies to increase domestic ownership within the hospitality sector.
Plans are in place to offer beachfront and waterfront lots to develop Air B&Bs, small hotels, and marinas.
Key locations such as Pensioner’s Beach, Willowby Bay, and Jolly Beach have been earmarked for these initiatives. Local entrepreneurs will also have the opportunity to take part in the creation of an 18-hole golf course on 200 acres of coastal land in Barbuda.
Moreover, the Prime Minister announced increased funding for an entrepreneurial fund to support local businesses, stimulating economic growth through direct investments.
