The construction of dormitories to house international students is a key component of the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus (UWIFIC) expansion plan.
Principal Professor C. Justin Robinson said this is a critical stage of the institution’s master plan.
The dormitories will be built on the current site of the Five Islands Primary School.
“On Thursday, we will have the groundbreaking ceremony and begin work on the new primary school. Once this step is completed, we can proceed with constructing the dormitories, a critical element for the campus’s expansion,” Robinson explained.
Robinson emphasized that attracting students from across the Caribbean and around the world is a central aspect of UWIFIC’s business model.
In parallel with the dormitory construction, the university is actively making adjustments to accommodate its rapid growth and expanding program offerings.
“We are upgrading lab facilities to be ready for the upcoming semester, as well as enhancing administrative capacities. Additionally, we are investing in a university-wide enterprise management computer system to efficiently manage the expanded campus,” Robinson added.
He highlighted that there are three main aspects of the expansion: the construction of the new primary school, the dormitories, and the enterprise management system.
These developments aim to support the campus’s growth and improve its overall functionality.
“So, we have upgraded some lab facilities that are going to be available for the start of this semester beginning next week, as well as some additional admin. And also, we are in the process of investing and having the installation of the university-wide enterprise management computer system, which again will be necessary to managing an expanded campus, he said.
“There are really three aspects of the expansion going on. The one that will likely be most visible to the public is the beginning of the construction of the new primary school,” He is added.
