Trinidad and Tobago Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher was reportedly held for questioning on Thursday in relation to her allegedly granting permission to former Strategic Services Agency (SSA) Director Roger Best to import two sniper rifles.
Martin said: “As you are aware, the Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood- Christopher has been arrested and detained along with ex-SSA Director Roger Best over the past few days.”
Martin said while she could not provide too many details on the matter, at this time, an active investigation remains ongoing. She said in addition; senior officers are working with the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and other relevant authorities to ensure that all legal protocols are observed.
She added: “The investigation is still ongoing and is at a sensitive stage. We are unable to provide specific details about the nature of the arrest. It is important to allow the investigation to unfold without interference.”
Martin further assured that the top CoP’s arrest does not and would not affect the day-to-day operations of the police service.
“Our officers remain committed to serving and protecting the citizens…and we will continue to function without disruption. We are fully operational, and the safety and security of the public remain our top priority,” she added.
“The integrity of the TTPS remains strong and we continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism,” she further assured.
Meanwhile, TTPS Legal Officer Zaheer Ali confirmed with members of the media that the investigations into Harewood-Christopher’s arrest surround the illegal procurement of firearms and related accessories.
He explained: “At this stage, we’re investigating the unlawful procurement of firearms and accessories and that will take us into the offense of misbehavior in public office…but it is not exhaustive. As the investigation continues, we may be looking at other offenses and that will be subject to a continued consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”
Ali further indicated that Harewood-Christopher is being offered a fair chance, and that objectivity and due process will take precedence in the investigation.
Asked by a reporter for details on how long she’s expected to remain detained, Ali reiterated that given the sensitive stage of the investigation, it would be difficult to include a timeline. He also could not provide a timeline for possible sentencing, should Harewood-Christopher be prosecuted.
