Assault charges against police officer Karim Warner were withdrawn Monday as his trial finally began, with one victim declining to participate in the proceedings.

The case stems from a December 2023 incident where Warner allegedly fired 12 shots at a white Toyota Mark X near Emerald Cove Resort in Willikies, following a dispute over a leased vehicle. Two people were in the car at the time of the shooting.

While the male occupant submitted a statement indicating that he does not wish to proceed with the case, four witnesses, including the female complainant, provided testimony during Monday’s hearing before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel.

Additional testimony came from a taxi driver and two police officers.

Evidence collected from the scene reportedly included bullet holes near a rear door handle and spent shell casings around the vehicle.

The trial, delayed for over a year, is scheduled to continue on March 8 with five more witnesses expected to testify.
