After months of delays, the newly refurbished Boy’s Training School is expected to be reopened later this month.
The news came from Cabinet, who this week confirmed a date. That date is February 24th.
A ceremony will take place that morning at the facility.
Repairs began in 2021 under the then Minister of Social Transformation, Dean Jonas, but due to several delays, including a break-in at the facility, the project, which was initially expected to be completed by June 2021, is now finally in its last leg.
“Staff are to be re-hired to ensure the institution returns to its full functionality,” the notes said.
The Boys Training School, a correctional facility for delinquent boys aged 10 to 18, has been undergoing renovations to address its deplorable conditions for over four years.
Since its closure at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility has faced challenges, including an incident in which two youngsters allegedly stole contents worth nearly $20,000.
The government hopes that creating a more conducive environment for the rehabilitation of children who break the law will improve their future prospects.
