The newly appointed Minister of Social and Urban Transformation, Rawdon Turner, has expressed a profound sense of hope that the Bowers Rehabilitation Center, will be the game changer for young men who needs a new beginning.
This rejuvenated center, formerly the Boys Training School, symbolizes a fresh start for young men seeking to reshape their lives and overcome their past struggles.
On Monday, amidst a gathering of community members and supporters, Turner articulated the government’s dedication to prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment, embracing mentorship instead of neglect, and fostering opportunity instead of succumbing to despair.
He emphasized, “Every young man who walks through these doors deserves a chance to turn his life around. With the right guidance, discipline, and unwavering support, we believe they can evolve into respected members of society.”
The Minister went on to highlight that this initiative extends beyond changing individual circumstances; it aims to strengthen familial bonds, uplift entire communities, and cultivate a safer environment for all.
The center is designed to accommodate eight boys initially, and Turner took the opportunity to inspire them with an empowering message: their past does not dictate their future.
“This is your chance to rewrite your story,” he declared, encouraging them to seize this moment to learn, grow, and ultimately become the men they were meant to be. The words echoed with resolve, underscoring the center’s mission and the transformative journey that lies ahead for these young individuals.
Meanwhile Health Minister and MP for the area Sir Molwyn Joseph said many times young people make mistakes, they are punished rather than rehabilitated.
“Too often in the society when young people make mistake the first response is to punish rather than to guide. We must ask ourselves what message are we sending without giving the resources to change…” he said.
Joseph said the government believes in redemption over rejection, opportunity over condemnation.
“Every child, regardless of their past, deserves an opportunity to build a better future and this facility ensures they receive the guidance, education and discipline to do just that”, he said.
The establishment of the Bowers Rehabilitation Center represents a promising new chapter for youth rehabilitation and support in Antigua and Barbuda.
hope this helps them. too many of our young men are going astray. But what about our young women who are going down a wrong path? Resources need to be set in place for them as well.
Upkeep seems to be one of our biggest problems in Antigua. please I beg, maintain the place. If a screw fall off replace it forthwith don’t wait till 2 fall.
Hope the young boys receive the help they require
