Michael Freeland is making a notable return to the Senate following his recent victory in the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) primary for the St. George constituency.
Just one day after being selected as the party’s candidate and caretaker, the Prime Minister appointed him to fill a Senate vacancy left by Rawdon Turner, who transitioned to the House of Representatives in January.
This appointment marks Freeland’s second tenure in the Senate; he served from 2014 to 2017.
In the recent primary, he secured a total of 350 votes, edging out his closest competitor, Joel Rayne, by a slim margin of nineteen votes. Bakisha Francis and Salim Browne trailed with 142 and 42 votes, respectively.
Freeland stepped down in December 2017 releasing a statement in which he expressed regret over what he described as attempts by political adversaries to tarnish his reputation related to the proceeds from an auction.
He has been clear that he did not engage in any wrongdoing, asserting that the auction was conducted in his private capacity on behalf of the Customs Department.
Senator Freeland clarified that the Customs Department was made aware of circumstances beyond his control that delayed his ability to transfer the proceeds in full and immediately.
He announced that he has since settled the full amount, having reached an agreement to pay the funds in installments over an approved timeline.
Despite his assertion of no impropriety in the situation, he stated that his resignation is intended to protect his family’s reputation from malicious attacks.
Meanwhile, Joel Rayne publicly congratulated Freeland, acknowledging the voters’ decision and expressing respect for their choice.
He also took a moment to thank his supporters, campaign team, and family for their unwavering support throughout the primary election process.
I think Joel would have made a much better candidate but hey I couldn’t vote.
Joel good luck in your future political endeavors
