CABINET NOTES: Misinformation About Alfa Nero Sale Continues to Threaten Antigua and Barbuda’s Image

In recent weeks, Antigua and Barbuda has found itself at the center of a swirling controversy surrounding the sale of the Alfa Nero yacht.

A federal judge in New York granted the attorneys of Yulia Guryeva-Motlokhov, daughter of Russian billionaire Andrey Guryeva, permission to issue subpoenas to access his financial records and other officials involved in the sale of a megayacht that her father had abandoned.

This week, the Cabinet expressed concern over the persistent spread of misinformation and disinformation that they believe undermines the nation’s image on the international stage.

In response to this legal challenge, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has engaged a US law firm to represent all defendants in what officials have labeled a “frivolous and fictitious lawsuit.”

The government maintains that the US Federal Court lacks jurisdiction over this matter, positioning the single attorney to defend everyone named in the case.

The government has also stated that covering the legal expenses is their responsibility, emphasizing their commitment to acting in the best interests of the nation and its people regarding the disposition of the Alfa Nero.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne stated that “the financial records will reveal the truth.” In a post on his Facebook page, he remarked that “all their malicious actions will be futile, leading them to fade into nothingness and despair.”
