Minister Nicholas speaks on new camera equipment purchases (file photo)

The Minister responsible for Technologies, Melford Nicholas, has announced a new purchase of camera surveillance equipment, at the request of the nation’s law enforcement entities. This new equipment, along with the already updated system, is set to assist law enforcement in addressing hot-spots and problem areas that have seen a recent uptick in criminal activity.

Speaking on Observer A.M regarding the expansion of the camera network as a crime fighting measure, Minister Nicholas says, ”at the last National Security meeting, the police, the army, and the ONCDP has highlighted some of the areas that they would like coverage.” Minister Nicholas goes on to assure that his ministry has undertaken that expansion, and that the procurement of the equipment is taking place even as he speaks.

The Minister reveals the expansion cost to be about 2 million EC dollars in capital expenditure, not including the running costs needed to maintain the network. He mentions a new sense of urgency to complete the expansion, especially in light of the nation’s most recent crime situation, though he admits that they are at the mercy of the equipment supplier. Minister Nicholas says 3 to 4 weeks is the estimated time of arrival for this new equipment, with the installation of service soon to follow.

This measure, inspired by the government’s increased commitment to combat the nation’s rising tide of violence and crime, will surely be seen as a most welcomed resource by all stakeholders.

Anything that can uplift the country I am good for it. So as long as these things actually materialize then they have my blessings. I always find this is slow in coming. Let us hurry this up.

Not one good thing the government can do and typical Antiguans just give a thumbs up and move on. The negativity always has to come in, just sickening. Anyway. Good way of giving protection.

So typical. Something has to happen for something to happen. Better late than never though
