Sir Lester Bird Medical Center
The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) marked World Health Day with a vibrant celebration focusing on the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” underscoring the critical importance of maternal and newborn health.
Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, the Medical Director of SLBMC, expressed the hospital’s unwavering commitment to enhancing health outcomes for mothers and infants in the community.
In recent years, SLBMC has achieved significant milestones in maternal and newborn care, maintaining a neonatal mortality rate below the target set by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Impressively, the hospital recorded a low of just 5.3 per 1,000 live births in 2023, highlighting their dedication to quality care.
As part of its ongoing efforts, SLBMC is set to launch a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening program aimed at the early identification of hearing impairments, which can significantly impact a child’s development. Additionally, the hospital is dedicated to supporting mothers through initiatives such as the High-Risk Antenatal Clinic.
A notable achievement was shared by Dr. Belle-Jarvis, who proudly announced zero maternal deaths in 2024. This remarkable feat is attributed to the consistent quality of care provided by the medical staff and the invaluable support from the community.
Looking ahead, SLBMC plans to enhance its diagnostic capabilities, including the introduction of point-of-care ultrasonography. The hospital has also received generous donations to upgrade its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Maternity Department.
With these initiatives, the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre aims to set the standard for maternal and newborn care in Antigua and Barbuda, fostering healthier beginnings for families throughout the community
Celebrating World Health Day with a focus on maternal and newborn health shows Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre’s commitment to supporting the well-being of mothers and babies.
You really have to commend SLBMC for being able to do something with nothing to talk about from the government
