Starting Tuesday, the Antigua Barbuda Transport Board (ABTB) initiated the collection of new vehicle licensing fees, a move designed to generate funds for crucial road infrastructure upgrades across Antigua.
Hubert Jarvis, the ABTB’s General Manager, shared that the transition to the increased fees has been smooth and well-received by the public.
“We kicked off the process this morning, and everything is running quite smoothly,” Jarvis told NewsCo.
He emphasized that citizens are aware of the new law, which was approved by Parliament earlier this year.
“There have been very few, if any, complaints. Most people understand the need for this change, and they hope the government will follow through on the promise to improve the roads,” he added.
The Transport Board has set up specific measures to ensure financial transparency. Jarvis explained that the funds collected from the new fees will be kept in a dedicated bank account, separate from other revenue sources.
For those curious about the fee structure, Jarvis classified it into two main categories: a flat increase of $100 for all passenger vehicles, regardless of brand, and a 40% increase for larger vehicles like SUVs and heavy machinery.
He pointed out that, when spread out over a month, the additional cost amounts to less than $10, which he described as a “modest” increase.
Noting that the previous rates had remained unchanged for over 30 years, Jarvis stated that the hike was long overdue.
“This adjustment has been anticipated for some time, and it’s crucial considering the inflation and demands on road maintenance,” he explained.
The Transport Board remains focused on ensuring the proper management of the new revenue stream. “We take government funds seriously. Anyone interested in our audited financial statements can access them directly,” Jarvis reassured the public.
He also urged drivers to exercise patience during this transition and emphasized safe driving practices.
“The real measure of our success will be the visible improvements in road conditions throughout Antigua over the next year,” he concluded.
So the government really carried through with this. Fire Fire Fire
😂😂😂😂🤣. What you thought they were playing bluff?
I’m just here rolling my eyes but I can’t be ungrateful I’m a product of duty free waiver. Love you Gaston
antigua need more protesting and to come out with massive crowds to get what they wants as long as its a good thing they wants
There will be no improvement. This place is hopeless.
I can’t believe the Antigua Barbuda Transport Board decided to start charging new vehicle licensing fees. When I heard the PM say this, I thought it was just a suggestion. Now the whole thing. Just when I thought we were finally past the constant money grabs! It feels like instead of investing in our roads, they’re just finding new ways to squeeze drivers dry. We need these upgrades, sure, but how about some transparency on where all this money is actually going? Disappointed to see this kind of move!
