The North Sound Drag Racing Track, located east of the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, continues to draw thousands of youth and racing enthusiasts.

In recognition of the facility’s growing popularity, the government has announced significant upgrades aimed at enhancing safety and meeting international standards.

Despite previous investments, officials have noted that the track requires immediate improvements.

Cabinet members convened to discuss the situation and concluded that resurfacing the track and installing safety barriers are crucial next steps to ensure the safety of drivers and spectators alike.

“This facility has become a safe haven for racing enthusiasts in Antigua and Barbuda,” according to notes from the Cabinet.

“With the sport gaining traction, it’s imperative that we take every necessary measure to protect everyone involved.”

Work on the upgrades is set to commence immediately, as the government aims to elevate the track’s safety standards and secure a safer racing environment for all.

With these enhancements, the Cabinet hopes to foster a more secure venue that supports the vibrant racing community in the region.

So funds from racing events will be used to cover the cost of these improvements right? While I’m all for drivers scratching their need for speed itch on a designated raceway, the government should not be the prime facilitators of its improvement. The racers/ owner(s) should pay most of the cost not the government/ taxpayers -unless they are one and the same. Tax payers money should be used to build and maintain public roads.
