Hon. Sir Steadroy Benjamin says that a new DPP has been appointed and their identity soon to be revealed (file photo)
Antigua and Barbuda’s government has officially filled the long-vacant Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) position, with the new appointee expected to assume office next month.
Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin confirmed the appointment to Observer Media while keeping the individual’s identity confidential until they officially begin their tenure.
“I am pleased to inform the nation that a new director of public prosecutions has in fact been appointed and will be coming to Antigua to start work in May of this year,” Sir Steadroy said in his announcement.
According to the Justice Minister, the incoming DPP brings substantial credentials to the role. “This gentleman is vastly experienced, knowledgeable, skilled in all areas of criminal law and has extensive experience in prosecuting, not only in the Caribbean but also around Canada and other areas of the world,” he noted.
Sir Steadroy expressed optimism about the appointment, adding, “We believe that we have at last found somebody who will really restore the office to what it is supposed to be and we will have a perfect director of public prosecutions. I’ll make the announcement formally when he starts, and give the public more information as to the individual who will be filling that position.”
The position became vacant following the 2023 departure of former DPP Anthony Armstrong, who faces professional misconduct charges in Jamaica. During the extensive search process, Shannon Jones-Gittens has served as the acting DPP, maintaining the office’s operations.
So if there are any objections to him being given the job, it would have to wait until he starts working
Who cares.
Not me for sure but you know how it is in Antigua
People just want a good job to be done.
I hope this is not another none native born of Antigua and Barbuda. A Barbudan is acting in the position right now, so why not give her the permanent role. Are the government saying that native born are incompetent for such position?
So we have to wait till they start for us to know who they are. That kinda not making sense
No Donna! But your current DPP(ag.) is Guyanese. So what’s up with this narrow minded nah- come-from-ya BS! Just stop this nonsense. The DPP’s office has been crying out for remediation for some time now with an unsatisfactory number of cases being dismissed due to extremely poor oversight from the DPP(ag.) and her staff. She has long outlived her usefulness!
I do hope, however, that the identity and bio of the incoming DPP will shared with the public BEFORE he assumes office next month. The spin doctors, I hear all have bought themselves new spinning tops for Easter
Coming to Antigua to work, this really makes me saddened.
As a born Antiguan I never know of any natives hold that possion which is a shocking shame.
At the age of fifty plus I reach my conclusion, the ABLP sideline natives from top positions
Have no regards for national security much more so our sovereignty.
Original 2 to 3 generation born Antiguans the present ABLP don’t care about you since you have been replaced by non-natives at the ballot box.
It’s time for a peaceful revolution, we need real patriots to rule our country even though I feel when majority of the economy is controlled by expatriates it’s will be a huge task
Meanwhile Antigua.news…what is the persons name?
Let’s not forget why the seat was empty in the first place. Accountability in the legal system is still a major issue.
Another foreign appointee? What does that say about local legal professionals being passed over again? We can’t afford another scandal like Armstrong. This time, we need integrity and transparency from day one.
Dem always fly in somebody from overseas. What happen to all dem bright Antiguan lawyers?
Honestly, I just hope this appointment brings real change. The justice system can’t function properly with all this instability at the top.
