One top union official is calling on the government to establish the Minimum Wage Committee which according to law show be meeting on a regular basis to review the minimum wage and ensure it is an adequate figure.

ABWU General Secretary Senator David Massiah made that demand while speaking at the union’s rally earlier this morning.

“We want to make sure that we have a minimum wage that is going to at least $13.50 to give people a fair living, a fair chance. We need a government that understand the people and is ready to do right by the people.

“I am calling on the government to establish that minimum wage committee and don’t run behind nothing,” Massiah stated.

The establishment of the stakeholders consultation committee, the Amendment of the Labour Code bill, the national health and safety policy and act, and the severance protection fund were also demanded by Senator Massiah.

Senator Massiah also fired back at critics who feel that unions serve no true purpose in todays times.

ABWU General Secretary Senator David Massiah said that it was quite the contrary as with the growing cost of living, increase in taxes and lack of increases in minimum proves why the role and purpose of the union is necessary.

Senator Massiah assured patrons that the AWBU will continue to fight for the rights of workers.
