Rihanna has announced to the world that she is expecting her third child with her partner A$AP Rocky.
The pop icon stole the show at the Met Gala 2025 blue carpet event in New York City, arriving in a sleek two-piece outfit which had been moulded to fit around her growing bump.
Her rapper partner was also present and arrived holding a diamond-studded umbrella and wearing his own custom look, created by his own fashion agency.
A$AP was is great spirits and opened up to the press, remarking: “It feels amazing; it is time that we show the people what we was cooking up and I am glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we are definitely happy, you know.”
The couple, already share two children, both boys – RZA born in 2022 and Riot in 2023.
This year’s Gala took place as usual on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art aimed at exploring black dandyism from the 18th century to its revival during the Harlem Renaissance.
It also looked at its impact on fashion today, with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”.
In line with that theme, A-list guests were instructed to follow the dress code and the majority did not disappoint.
Pregnancy announcements following a pattern
For her first pregnancy, Rihanna organised a photo-shoot in New York’s Harlem with photographer Mike Diggs, then went full-on with her second when announcing the good news during her half time performance at the Super Bowl 2023.
With baby number three on the way it means that a ninth album that many believed was in the making, will probably have to wait a little while longer.
When the 37-year-old was spotted walking into a recording studio in January this year, fans started getting their hopes up that the star could be planning her grand return to music, after a nine year absence.
There had even been rumours that she might even perform at Glastonbury 2025 and reports that plans were in place for a series of London shows in the summer.
“Biggest” night in fashion
The Met Gala is a haute couture annual fundraising affair for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Stars from film, music, and fashion converged at the site to be seen at what is commonly regarded as fashion’s biggest annual night out and a celebration of heritage, identity, and bold self-expression.
Tickets for the event cost $75,000, although that fee is small change to most if not all in attendance.
Chance to express
Its theme has been different each year since 1973, but is usually connected to the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, which this year has been inspired by Monica L Miller’s book: Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, published in 2009.
The Met stated that the show “presents a cultural and historical examination of black style from the 18th Century to today through the lens of dandyism” and pointed out that attendees are given the opportunity to express themselves through fashion, often producing elaborate and highly publicized outfits inspired by the evening’s theme and broader cultural context.
Concentrating on men’s fashion
This year’s theme of “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” was the first since 2003 to focus exclusively on menswear. It was inspired by a newly unveiled exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume institute featuring the “black-dandy”, which Vogue explained: “examines the importance of clothing and style to the formation of black identities in the Atlantic diaspora”.
Style icons out in force
A-list celebrities were out in huge numbers with the likes of Zendaya, Dua Lipa, Cardi B, Doechii, Kim Kardashian, Demi Moore, Diana Ross and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny bringing their own interpretations to the theme with dramatic outfits.
From the world of sport Sir Lewis Hamilton looked his usual cool self in a cream suit and Olympic gymnast and gold medal winner Simone Biles brought some colour to the event with a striking blue minidress.
In one of the evening’s most bizarre looks American rapper Andre 3000 turned up with a black and white piano strapped to his back!
