Court proceedings are underway for Sean Weathered, a suspended police recruit charged with malicious damage to a sheetrock wall at the Sir Wright George Police Academy.

The Magistrates’ Court trial before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel began Tuesday, with Weathered being represented by legal team Wendel Alexander and Wayne Benjamin Marsh.

Prosecutors allege Weathered damaged a wall valued at $70 in his room where he was reportedly confined following complaints against him.

Acting Inspector Alvin Titus testified Wednesday that on July 19, 2024, around 10am, he joined Chief Instructor Rodney Ellis and other officers to inspect Weathered’s room, where they found damage to the sheetrock wall beside the defendant’s bed.

Titus recounted that when questioned by Ellis, Weathered explained he was leaning against the wall when it became damaged. The witness indicated the hole was approximately five feet above floor level.

Defence attorneys appear to be focusing on alleged unfair treatment of their client, who is currently suspended.

Cross-examination revealed Weathered had previously started recruit training before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted his progress, and was among recruits who contracted the virus.

The defence suggested that when weathered requested permission to seek hospital treatment, he was allegedly told resignation would be necessary—a claim Titus could not verify.

Attorneys also highlighted potential disciplinary inconsistencies, referencing an incident where another recruit reportedly broke a door without facing criminal charges.

They additionally questioned the handling of sexual allegations against a different trainee, whom Titus confirmed had been suspended.

The trial will resume on September 9 and 10.
