In the wake of the recent strike action by public school teachers in Antigua and Barbuda, the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, Lionel Max Hurst, has addressed concerns regarding the loss of student hours.
Hurst confirmed that measures are being considered to recover the lost instructional time, which may include extending school hours.

The industrial action, which took place last week, was initiated by teachers, on the advice of their union, for the payment of fees owed to a small group of educators.

The strike raised significant concerns about the impact on students’ education and the overall school calendar.

During a recent Cabinet Press Briefing, Hurst responded to a question posed by Antigua.news reporter Cory Wayland about the government’s plans to mitigate the disruption caused by the strike.

“There is a certain number of hours that students must undergo in each of our schools, and when that number is not reached, we lengthen the school year or deduct holidays…I am not sure how that will work out…They will catch up, maybe at the end of the school year. Instead of ending on June 15th they will extend it so that the time is made up” he said.

He emphasized the commitment to ensuring that students do not fall behind and that their educational needs remain a priority.

  4. Bunch a crap if you so concerned about the children as you pretend to be bla bla bla, pay the teachers just like you pay your selves. A government minister is never owed and gets everything else for free

  5. And now you all just gonna throw off parents schedule. By extending school hours parents now have to adjust their time to accommodate that move putting their jobs at risk in some cases
