Man jailed for two years for having sex with minor
A man has been sentenced to two years imprisonment after being found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Tunde Bakre.
The conviction comes after a jury returned an 8-1 guilty verdict in the trial of Dequan Yearwood last year, prompting a dramatic scene as displeased family members had to be removed from the courtroom due to their disruptive behavior.
The incident escalated when one family member of the convicted approached a juror following the verdict, putting his hand in the juror’s face and making what authorities described as threatening gestures.
According to case details, the victim was a 14-year-old girl with a learning disability who is developmentally delayed by approximately three years. The incident occurred in January 2022 when the girl was discovered in the defendant’s apartment.
When police arrived at the scene, the defendant eventually opened the door, at which point the young girl was observed fixing her clothing while the defendant stood by the bed.
