The restoration of Antigua and Barbuda’s historic Government House is on schedule for completion in the first quarter of 2026, according to Dr. Gabriella Howell, Director of Historic Preservation at the Heritage Trust.
“We’re looking at quarter one of 2026, so we are very hopeful that we are able to keep to that timeline.” Dr. Howell said. “We have a water tech building now, which is something we didn’t have before, so we are ready to receive the season. We are ready for the wet weather coming in. So, we are just now working more on the internal part of it.”
The remainder of the external work is expected to be over in just about six weeks.
The building is also set to showcase a groundbreaking museum dedicated to the lives and legacies of Antigua and Barbuda’s past and present Governor Generals, their families, and the staff who served alongside them.
Dr. Howell said, “The content of the museum will include specific rooms, which will enable visitors to pick up the phone and listen to people retelling their stories or their memories of government house or interactions with previous governors.”
The Heritage Trust is midway through the ambitious restoration project and remains committed to retaining as much of the house and its contents as possible.
The restoration marks a significant effort to safeguard one of the nation’s most iconic heritage sites, ensuring it continues to serve both ceremonial purposes and the broader public as a cultural and historical touchstone.
I can hardly recognize this building. Good work
The beat goes on….When it is finished write a proper story. Antigua.news you need to stop being the governments propaganda machine.
Lets hope that they could finish the building in a timely manner, but knowing this government it might not finish till much later.
Wait….. that’s all we do in Antigua and Barbuda. Waiting in vain. This is all. Eventually we see these projects finish when we are old and gray. Our next generation will see it I guess
