The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued an urgent advisory for citizens as heavy rainfall continues to affect the region, creating hazardous conditions for both residents and motorists.
Meteorologist Lenard Josiah reports that ongoing heavy showers are particularly dangerous, urging drivers to exercise caution and avoid flooded roads whenever possible. The situation poses serious risks, and he emphasizes the importance of safety during these challenging weather conditions.
Residents of low-lying and flood-prone areas are being advised to seek higher ground as the heavy rains are expected to persist for several more hours. This precaution is vital to ensure their safety amidst rising water levels.
A flash flood warning has been issued for Antigua and Barbuda, effective until 2 a.m. Sunday. This warning has also been extended to nearby islands, including Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla. A flash flood warning indicates that flooding has either been detected or is anticipated in the very near future.
The Met Office reports that rainfall totals have already reached up to four inches in certain areas of Antigua, with an additional two inches possible in the coming hours. The rainfall is attributed to a trough affecting the North Eastern Caribbean.
Josiah assures the public that the Met Office will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and will provide updates as necessary to keep residents informed. In the meantime, all citizens are urged to stay vigilant and prioritize their safety as these adverse weather conditions persist.
