F.A Minister Addresses Travel to the U.S. Amid New Immigration Enforcement Policy

Hon. E.P. Chet Greene

E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has released an official statement focusing on the implications of recent changes to U.S. immigration enforcement for citizens of Antigua and Barbuda intending to travel to the United States.

The U.S. government has announced a more stringent immigration enforcement policy, highlighting that anyone entering the country illegally or overstaying their visa now faces an increased risk of arrest, deportation, and potential bans on future travel.

In light of this, Minister Greene reassured that the majority of Antiguans and Barbudans travel to the United States for legitimate reasons, such as vacations, business engagements, family visits, or shopping, and that those who comply with visa requirements will continue to be welcomed.

However, he cautioned against the actions of individuals who might think they can enter the U.S. on a visa and remain beyond its expiration date.

“To those who believe they can extend their stay by illegal means, including for purposes such as giving birth or residing without legal status, I urge you to reconsider,” Greene stated.

He emphasized that the U.S., like Antigua and Barbuda, has the sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws.

The minister reiterated that violations will incur strict penalties, an enforcement policy made clear by U.S. officials.

“Our Government cannot protect those who knowingly violate U.S. laws. Instead, we are committed to safeguarding the reputation of our citizens, ensuring that those who travel lawfully are respected,” Greene added.

Highlighting the importance of the bilateral relationship, Greene expressed that the U.S. remains a vital partner for Antigua and Barbuda.

“Trust and mutual respect form the foundation of any partnership. This respect must extend to our respective laws,” he explained.

Finally, Minister Greene called upon all citizens to act with integrity and prudence while travelling, emphasizing the need to uphold the credibility built over generations by hardworking Antiguans and Barbudans.

“Let us not jeopardize the standing that our people have established,” he concluded.
