Committee Appointed to Prepare Outcome Document Addressing Public Servant Performance Issues

A designated team has been tasked with preparing an outcome document to guide implementation across all government departments to address inefficiencies, worker accountability, union relations, and efforts to reform and professionalize the public sector.

These meetings began last week with Cabinet and continued this week with Permanent Secretaries, Government Heads of Department and Union Representatives.

Discussions this week centered around serious training gaps and the need for an active training division to collaborate in developing accredited courses that can contribute to efficiency, proficiency, and career advancement within the public sector.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne stressed that promotions should be based on competence and performance, not just length of service, to ensure qualified individuals advance and contribute effectively.

He also spoke on the need for Permanent Secretaries and Senior Officials to familiarize themselves with the Procurement Administration Act and other Legislations and Amendments relating to their roles.

Training will also take place with these top officials at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus in collaboration with the Harvard Core Curriculum on public leadership.

They will also attend the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus AI Annual Research Conference on June 23 and 24. Government will be covering the costs for registration.

To ensure continuity in the dialogue, a team of senior officials will be invited to the Cabinet meeting next week to further the discussions.

  1. Once again it starts at the top. Stop hiring your partners, your partners children, your cousin, and etc. Do away with nepotism and favor firings. Instead hire people who are qualified for the position being filled.

Also, mandatory month long training for new hires and refreshers for others in customer relations , how to greet patrons, communications, decorum, how to ward off conflict, diffusing conflicts, and etc.

Documented performance based promotions must become the norm.

Office romances must result in immediate termination especially between a boss and a subordinate. I am convinced that this is a main factor in poor performance because it breeds disrespect and familiarity where the converse is obviously required.

Just my tuppence, but I could go on til the break of dawn!

  2. This is more serious than we think it is. After the teachers strike World Boss isnt taking any chance. The teachers strike made us realize that there are dead weight within the government ministry that can cause an entire government to fail. And this almost happened.

  3. I fully support performance-based promotions. Competence should always outweigh time served. It’s about time we hold public servants accountable and prioritize training. A more professional public sector benefit everyone.

  4. Good talk, but will this actually change anything? We’ve heard about public sector reform before, and not much happened.

    • Move to the head of the class. They are not serious. I was instructed by the World Boss to promote someone or risk losing my job, when that person was and remain unable to objective prove they are competent and continue to provide substandard work. I became the bad guy because they have been working long not because they are competent and so deserve the promotion.
