The Office of Disaster Services reports that shelters are ready and training is being conducted to fully prepare for this year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The Hurricane season officially begins on June 01 and ends on November 30, although weather patterns can be experienced outside of the season.

Mr. Sherrod James, the Director of NODS, along with Deputy Director Mr. Craig Cole, to provide an update on the nation’s readiness for the upcoming hurricane season at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Mr. James informed the Cabinet that the Shelters List has already been published and that Local Directors are currently undergoing training to effectively manage these shelters.

He also highlighted that discussions are ongoing with a partner organization regarding the procurement of specialized shelters capable of accommodating over 200 people. The plan includes securing one of these purpose-built shelters for Barbuda and two for Antigua.

In addition, the Cabinet was alerted to the necessity of cleaning drains, waterways, and ponds to mitigate flooding and other risks prior to the start of the season.

In response, they promptly approved the assignment of two long-boom excavators to NODS to facilitate these essential clean-up efforts.

Recognizing the importance of effective communication during emergencies, the Cabinet also allocated funding for the immediate enhancement of NODS’s communication capabilities.

As the hurricane season approaches, these proactive measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and preparedness of the community.
