Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Wellness, the Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Senator Michael Joseph, emphasized the government’s unwavering support for disaster preparedness initiatives despite facing external funding difficulties.
“Preparedness will always be a priority for the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and all associated agencies, and the government remains committed to providing its support,” Joseph declared during a briefing.
The statement comes in light of recent challenges following the withdrawal of US funding for disaster preparedness in the region
To address these gaps, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has intensified efforts, exemplified by the recent establishment of a logistics hub in Barbados in collaboration with the World Food Programme. This initiative aims to enhance response capabilities throughout the region.
Moreover, NODS has indicated that it is actively seeking partnerships with both regional and international organizations to ensure the maintenance of training standards and the availability of necessary equipment for effective disaster management.
The government’s dedication to enhancing disaster preparedness reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding communities in the face of natural disasters, reinforcing the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders.
Well we need them to be. That is what we voted them in for, to protect us!
