“You are in safe hands. You need not worry”. That’s the word from Prime Minister Gaston Browne, as he reassured citizens regarding the recent concerns over potential visa restrictions from the United States.

This response follows the leak of a confidential memo from the U.S. State Department, as reported by The Washington Post, indicating the possibility of travel bans for individuals from 36 countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, due to Citizenship by Investment Programs (CIP).

The leaked memo outlines that these restrictions could come into effect if participating countries fail to meet newly established immigration benchmarks within the next 60 days. Such measures have raised alarms among nations that rely heavily on CIPs as a significant economic driver.

In his comments to state media, Browne expressed confidence in Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic capabilities, asserting that the country’s robust international ties and negotiation skills will prevent the U.S. from enacting any punitive measures against the twin-island nation.

Browne’s reassurances come at a critical time when CIPs are scrutinized for their implications on immigration and security.

Critics argue that these programs may facilitate pathways for individuals who might not otherwise gain access to the U.S. or other developed nations.

  1. Since when did Brown say anything believable? Big rhetoric from a little man. I have never agreed with the idea of CIP. I don’t believe a man should be able to buy a citizenship period!!

  2. While it’s important for a leader to project confidence, ‘That will never happen’ is a very strong statement when you’re talking about potential US sanctions. This issue with the CIP and visa restrictions is deeply concerning, and it will take more than just words to fully resolve it. We need concrete action and continued dialogue to safeguard our citizens’ travel rights.

You should know this. the US does what the US wants and to come here and say that can never happen is a clear signal for Trump to make it happen. Trump wants to have the last say in everything. “That will never happen”. Wrong choice of words PM but let us wait and see what will truly happen.
