Antigua and Barbuda has a new reason to celebrate as Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose mother hails from the twin-island nation, has been named the 2024-25 NBA Most Valuable Player.
At just 26 years old, the Toronto-born superstar has taken over the league with his elite skills and leadership while bringing immense pride to Antigua and the Caribbean.
Born to Antiguan parents, Gilgeous-Alexander’s roots run deep. His mother, Charmaine Gilgeous-Alexander, is a former Olympic track athlete who competed for Antigua in the 1992 Olympics, while his father, Vaughn Alexander, won a Toronto high school basketball championship and personally coached Shai through his youth.
The superstar guard completed one of the most dominant individual campaigns in NBA history by guiding the Oklahoma City Thunder to a thrilling Game 7 triumph over the Indiana Pacers, earning NBA Finals MVP honors in the process—becoming the first Canadian player to capture the award.
