ABWU Calls for Action Against Employers Failing to Remit Social Security Deductions

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) has taken a firm stance against employers who illegally withhold Social Security contributions from their employees’ wages without forwarding those deductions to the Social Security Scheme as mandated by law.

In a series of letters sent to the Antigua and Barbuda Employers’ Federation (ABEF) and the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA), the Union voiced grave concerns regarding the detrimental effects of this ongoing issue on workers’ rights and financial security.

Chester Hughes, Deputy General Secretary of the ABWU, stated, “Withholding or delaying these contributions is not only illegal but morally unacceptable! It directly threatens the financial stability and future welfare of dedicated individuals, including single parents who rightfully depend on their contributions being accurately paid and recorded.”

The ABWU highlighted that this type of disenfranchisement can have long-lasting repercussions, particularly for employees approaching retirement or those who may need to access benefits due to health issues or job loss.

“Many workers only find out about the non-payment when they attempt to file a claim during critical times. This betrayal severely impacts their financial stability and erodes public trust in employers and the overall social protection framework,” the Union added.

The ABWU is urging the ABEF and the ABHTA to promptly encourage their members to adhere to the laws surrounding Social Security contributions. Additionally, the Union calls on the government and the Antigua and Barbuda Social Security Board to enhance enforcement efforts and hold non-compliant employers accountable.

“This should involve stronger inspection measures, increased penalties for violations, and publicizing the names of offending employers,” the letter stated.

The ABWU expresses its readiness to collaborate with all relevant parties to ensure that this pressing issue is addressed with the urgency and seriousness it warrants. demands.
