Anetta D Jackson and Latisha Browne
Two young Antiguans have successfully completed their studies abroad through the Chevening Scholarship program.
Anetta D Jackson and Latisha Browne pursued fully funded master’s degree programmes in the United Kingdom.
The Chevening Scholarships scheme is a global scholarship programme of the British government. The scholarships are awarded to exceptional individuals with leadership potential to study one-year master’s degrees in a range of subjects at UK universities.
Jackson who completed a MSc in Gender, Policy and Inequalities at the London School of Economics took to social media to share her gratitude.
“Look how time flies! I’m now a Chevening Alumni rounding out what has been such a wonderful experience. Coming together to celebrate my fellow Scholars as we embark on our new beginning is quite emotional.
“Just a year ago I had no idea how valuable these people would be to me and how they would shape my time here. As I work on getting through my dissertation period and prepare myself to return back to my day job as Crown Counsel II in September, I can reflect and say this year was definitely my year.
“Latisha Browne my sister, I couldn’t imagine this year without you. Thank you to my family who remain steadfast in their support of my pursuits. UK in Barbados and Eastern Caribbean thanks for the opportunity to challenge myself and grow,” Jackson wrote.
Crown Counsel Jackson is employed at the Attorney General’s Chambers where she litigates in child protection matters and supports the human rights portfolio.
She previously worked for the Directorate of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of Social Transformation, supporting the gender-based violence response and referral pathway.
Over the past four years, she has been involved in gender justice advocacy through her work with local NGO Intersect Antigua and is a former Black Feminist Fund Fellow.
While Browne, who is currently a Forensics Technician within the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, now holds a MSc in Forensic Investigation.
A degree she attainted at the Cranfield University in Bedford.
This adds to her bachelor’s degree in criminology and Sociology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Investigation from the University of The West Indies.
Browne, who said she believes in striving for excellence, also shared that it is her hope to become the first female ballistics expert in Antigua and Barbuda.
She too took to social media to celebrate this new milestone.
“Today marks a bittersweet milestone as the closing ceremony for the 2024–2025 Chevening cohort draws the curtains on an extraordinary chapter. I am officially transitioning into the Chevening Alumni community!
“As I continue to tidy up my thesis project on gunshot residue, a journey that has been anything but easy. I remain steadfast, drawing strength from the resilience that defines my beautiful homeland. This experience has pushed me beyond my limits, taught me perseverance, and fuelled my passion for forensic science. Throughout this journey, I have been blessed with invaluable networks and life changing experiences in the forensic field, broadening my perspective and sharpening my skills.
“My hope is to transfer this knowledge to my colleagues back home and, with the support of the relevant stakeholders, make meaningful contributions to the advancement of forensic science in our region,” Browne said.
“A special mention goes to my Chevening sister, Annetta Jackson there’s no one else I would rather have shared this journey with. I would do it all over again with you by my side! As this chapter closes, it’s now time to defend my thesis and finish strong. Here’s to resilience, lifelong learning, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence.
“Thank you to Chevening Awards (FCDO) for awarding me the opportunity to meet great people and to get closer to that goal in becoming a Forensic Ballistics Expert. I am far from finished but with GOD at the forefront I’ll get by. As the First Female Officer to receive this award, I hope to see other officers take that leap and go for their aspirations, no matter the hurdle that may try to discourage them,” Browne added.
Jackson and Browne join a long list of Antiguan and Barbudans who have completed the Chevening program.
