On Thursday, a meeting of the Youth Parliament took place in St. John’s, focusing on the alarming issue of drug, cannabis, and tobacco misuse among young individuals in the community.
Under the leadership of Speaker Jessica Zouetr in the Parliament Chambers, members debated a motion aimed at addressing the increasing instances of substance abuse among minors.
Prime Minister Chrysean Jarvis proposed several initiatives to combat this issue, including the creation of a Detox Retreat / Youth Drug-Free Camp, the initiation of a Youth Drug-Free Ambassador Programme, and the establishment of a Youth Rehabilitation Facility, among others.
The session featured a vigorous discussion, with contributions from various members, including Leader of the Opposition, Crystal Percival.
The Youth Parliament, founded in 2019, boasts around 80 members and operates as an independent advocacy organization.
Zouetr also serves as the president, and the group aims to highlight issues affecting youth while engaging in community development projects across different constituencies.
Members work closely with local Members of Parliament to execute initiatives in their assigned areas.
Huge congratulations, Khadalia! Your commitment to your community and leadership at such a young age is truly remarkable. Wishing you all the best in your new role
The next generation of politicians
Some hope in the future! Tackling drug use among youths from young would lead to no drug use amongst youths in the future! Love to see it
I love that they’re not just talking, but proposing real initiatives like camps and rehab. Let’s give them the support to make it happen.
The best people to advocate for young people IS YOUNG PEOPLE
