Measles Crisis Hits the Americas

Mid-June 2025 saw alarming developments in the health landscape of the Americas as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported a staggering total of 7,132 confirmed measles cases and 13 deaths across the region, including the Caribbean.

This represents a 29-fold increase from the 244 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Among the nations affected, Belize reported 34 confirmed cases with no fatalities. Canada faced a more severe situation, with one death and 3,170 cases. Mexico reported 2,597 cases and nine deaths, while the United States saw three deaths and 1,227 cases.

PAHO emphasized that these outbreaks originated from importations from both within the region and beyond, with the most vulnerable populations being children under five and adolescents aged 10 to 19.

The organization highlighted a critical need for enhanced immunization efforts, calling on all countries to ensure at least 95% coverage with two doses of the measles-containing vaccine, particularly in communities experiencing low immunization rates or ongoing outbreaks.

In response to the crisis, PAHO is stepping up its technical cooperation with numerous countries to bolster epidemiological surveillance, provide training for healthcare workers, and engage communities to facilitate timely detection and effective responses.

This uptick in measles cases is not unique to the Americas. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that as of June 6, 2025, there were 188,355 suspected cases and 88,853 confirmed cases in 168 countries, indicating a concerning global trend that necessitates immediate action.
