INET Party Monarch Quarterfinals Run Off set to commence tonight

Just before the Jam Session tonight on Redcliffe Street, the INET Party Monarch Quarterfinal Run Off will take place.

The action will start at 7pm with 12 artistes vying for two spots in the semifinals.

On Wednesday, the artistes drew their performance spots. The line up in the Groovy category is Young Vice, Zamoni, Vicious, Sazzy Sazelle, Sammie C and Natural Rampler while in the Jumpy, its Johnny Come Lately, Blade, Kid Fresh, Ebony T, Buttaz and Naycha Kid.

Controversy hit after concerns were raised when two artistes advanced to the semifinals but did not compete in the official quarterfinal rounds that were just earlier this month at Jack Idle.

The two artistes had performed before hand due to a clash in their schedule where they were booked for other private events overseas but that did not sit well with the public or the other competing artistes.

It was on July 4, that the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission (ABFC) met with the executive of the National Soca Fraternity to address these concernsand in a spirit of fairness and collaboration, the National Soca Fraternity proposed the resolution that the two affected competitors, along with the next five placing artistes (positions 16–20) in both the Groovy and Jumpy segments of the competition, participate in a live performance round judged by the same panel as the original quarterfinal event.

This recommendation was accepted by the Minister of Festivals Daryll Matthew and the Festivals Commission, with the full support of both parties.

  2. Not ideal, but at least the run-off gives everyone a fair shot. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a yearly drama.

  3. Why were they allowed to pick when they said they would be performing before an audience at jam corner. I thought that performance would determine if they would advance to the semis

  4. Still wondering how two performers got to skip the quarterfinals in the first place. We need tighter rules going forward to avoid this kind of drama.
