Antigua and Barbuda is making preparations to host another major event and is calling on volunteers to step forward.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will be held in the twin-island nation next year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs E.P. Chet Greene held an appreciation ceremony last night at the Copper and Lumber Store in Nelson’s Dockyard, celebrating the contributions of volunteers during the recent Organisation of American States (OAS) 55th Regular Session of the General Assembly in St. John’s.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a prominent host for international gatherings, Greene emphasized the importance of volunteerism.
“We need a dedicated group of individuals willing to offer their time and skills for the greater good,” he said. “Volunteering transcends monetary rewards; it’s about fostering community spirit and national pride. Your involvement can inspire others to join in.”
The upcoming Commonwealth meeting promises to be a significant event, larger in scope than the recent gatherings. Greene acknowledged the pivotal role volunteers play in making these events successful and creating a positive image for the nation.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Clarence Pilgrim, reinforced Greene’s message, praising the volunteers as the unsung heroes of the recent gathering. “Your dedication brought life to our logistics and planning,” he stated.

“You were the friendly faces welcoming guests, the diligent hands ensuring everything ran smoothly — truly the backbone of our diplomatic efforts. You deserve recognition not just as volunteers, but as champions of our nation’s hospitality and unity.”
The evening concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to group leaders, while other volunteers will receive their recognition through the ministry.

Local businesses also contributed prizes for a draw, adding a festive element to the occasion and celebrating the collective effort of the volunteer community.

Count me in please
Two major international events back-to-back? Antigua’s stepping up in a big way. Hope we can handle the logistics, and the traffic
We hosting all these big meetings… but are we making sure the average Antiguan benefits? I hope local vendors and creatives get a piece of the action.
Major international meetings, and we’re hosting again? That’s a flex for a small nation. Hoping volunteer spots open up for youth and creatives too!
