The journey to employment can be filled with hope and promise, but it can also present profound challenges, particularly for individuals facing discrimination.
This is exemplified in the story of Briston Smith, who, despite his determination, confronted an unthinkable setback due to a perceived disability.
His experience at Chase Supermarket serves as a stark reminder of the barriers many face in their pursuit of opportunity and equality.Â
As we explore Smith’s story, we delve into the impact of such discrimination and the resilience required to navigate a world that often overlooks the potential of those who are different.

Briston Smith was denied a job interview because of his disability

I hope justice will be done so tht this injustice starts and end at Chase supermarket..
I pray he gets the justice he deserves..God bless him
I hope justice will be done so tht this injustice will start and end at Chase Supermarket..
Looking forward to the follow up.
I know in other countries like America, Canada and England he would have gotten a job, because it’s against the law there to discriminate some because of their disabilities. I remember working for a contractor company who has a contract with the US Air Force. The company hired an American as a HVAC technician who had a postictal leg—he lost one of his. I watched that gentleman worked on air conditioning and chiller units including walk-in freezer and refrigerator. His postictal leg didn’t stop him from performing his daily duties. I also worked with few other Americans who had other disabilities. Antiguans who migrated and are living in the countries mentioned about can also testify that disabilities isn’t an issue for employment where they’re. Antigua needs to get on board with the twenty first century. We are too much behind.
Whoever is responsible for discriminating against this young man should be reprimanded. This individual is not fit to be in that position. Simple exercises on the sopt could determine whether this man is fit for the position. I am really disappointed as a former manager.
Imagine, the GUYANESE owners and operators of this supermarket were Not denied opportunities for growth when the landed here in search of opportunities. And now this!! I support đź’Ż that call for a nation-wide boycott of that goul-smelling supermarket on the Factory Road!!!
* foul- smelling. (Correction)
They should have given him a chance, and let him prove himself wrong not just turn him down like that
I hate that supermarket so much. Judging a person by disability is never a good thing. Once they have the ambition it simply means that they have the courage in themselves
I had an encounter with the son before and I know he’s a sick kid no manners no customer service he even went as far as look me up on Facebook and curse me out before just because complain about the price displayed on the shelf and it rang up for a different price at the register he’s so rude so I know anything is possible at chase
im shocked at what I just listened too. You can’t deny someone an interview or a job just because of a disability. You embrace that person. Everyone deserves a shot at life! Not be judged
Great work Bique-Charles and Antigua.news and Spainish Ambassador. You guys have been doing good work. Sometimes I believe there’s too much politics but when I come across stories like these where you fight for the marginalized people I am convinced that there a few good men and women within your establishment who cares about people. Keep up the good work. You guys deserve an award for the role that you continue to play. @ Bique Charles you have an exceptional voice and I may have a story for you.
Thank you Ben Simmons. I can be contacted at [email protected].
Where are our human rights and other civic organisations in this manner? Bernard Warner, what is your reaction to this allegedly blatant discrimination by the operators of CHASE SUPERMARKET?
Now that he he has muster up quite a lot of support with his side of the story and we have not herd from the employer who has the right to hire and fire let’s start a go Fund me for him and every supporter can gave a 100 dollars so he can start his own vendor business and be able to feed himself and family so many people are doing great being self employed he can used this experience as a form of motivation to be a success story even Chase Supermarket may surprise us with their contribution
I doubt that Chace will be seeing me or my money anytime soon. We don’t buy sickness nor disabilities, and the hierarchy of Chase may you get what you deserve
This is absolutely infuriating and completely unacceptable! Denying a qualified job candidate an interview solely because of a disability is a blatant act of discrimination and goes against everything we stand for
Chase must remember, what goes around comes around and it’s not how one starts but how you finish.
