Minister of Health Sir Molwyn Joseph announces sickle cell healthcare initiative

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph

Minister for Health Sir Molwyn Joseph has updated the Cabinet on the significant strides being made at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) to improve healthcare services for individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease.

In a promising development, a dedicated treatment space has been earmarked at the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), located on the grounds of the former Holberton Hospital.
This specialized facility aims to provide tailored care and support specifically for sickle cell patients, marking a noteworthy enhancement in the healthcare offerings at SLBMC.

During a recent tour of the site attended by members of the Sickle Cell Association and individuals affected by the disease, Minister Joseph reiterated the government’s commitment to this vital project.

He revealed that plans are in motion to further develop the designated area into a fully equipped patient-centered unit, with construction set to begin immediately. The Minister emphasized that establishing this unit is a top priority for SLBMC.

In addition to clinical enhancements, the Centre is gearing up to launch a national registration drive aimed at identifying and registering all sickle cell patients across Antigua and Barbuda.

This initiative seeks to create a comprehensive national database, which will facilitate improved long-term care, enhance access to treatment, and enable more strategic planning and allocation of healthcare resources.
