4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Antigua early this morning, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC).

The earthquake occurred at 5:51 am local time (9:51 UTC), with its epicenter located at latitude 17.66N and longitude 61.55W at a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the centre’s automatic earthquake location system, the epicentre was positioned 69 kilometres northeast of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. Other nearby cities include Brades, Montserrat, located 121 kilometres northeast of the epicentre, and Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, 137 kilometres east-northeast.

The UWI SRC noted that the preliminary location has been automatically calculated by computer algorithms and is subject to potential revisions pending evaluation by SRC analysts.

There have been no reports on the island of tremors being felt.

    • A 4.2 magnitude at a relatively shallow depth of 10km can certainly be felt by some, even if not widely reported. It depends on proximity and local geology.
