Senator Clement Antonio was sworn in today as Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Works. Held at Government House in St. John’s, the event was hosted by Director General Maurice Merchant and included several other members of government.
Deputy Governor General Sir Clare Roberts was the first official to deliver remarks on the occasion. He charged the nation’s newest government promotee to fulfill his duties with awareness.
“As Minister of State, you assume your portfolio at a time marked by a surge in public expectations”, said Sir Clare. “Let this new appointment serve as a reminder that leadership is both a privilege and a duty.”

Senator Marie-Clare Hurst then heaped glowing praise on Antonio, expressing the satisfaction she feels about her colleague’s forward progress.
“I am so proud of Clement, it is beyond words; because I’ve watched him grow and I’ve watched him develop into this man that he is today”, said Hurst. “I am sure he will continue to provide excellent service for the people of Antigua and Barbuda – he has already started.”
Senator Antonio took his oath of office in front of family members, friends, and work peers, swearing to faithfully bear true allegiance to His Majesty, King Charles III, and to discharge his duties with integrity and responsibility.
He thanked the government leadership for their faith in him, and expressed his confidence in successfully fulfilling this new role, as he feels that his past experiences have equipped him with the necessary skills to excel.
“I’m very thankful, especially thankful to the Honorable Prime Minister and Minister Maria Browne for their confidence”, said Antonio. “I have seen a lot, I’ve dealt with a lot, and based on that experience, it has equipped me to deal with a lot of the issues that we’re facing now.”

Congratulations, Senator Antonio! We need strong, grounded leadership in housing and infrastructure. Hoping to see impactful changes, especially in rural areas.
Infrastructure across the island needs real attention. I hope the new Minister of State brings urgency and accountability to the Ministry of Works.
