Prime Minister Gaston Browne
Antigua and Barbuda is currently mourning the loss of Vonde Bowers, a promising young cricketer whose untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the community. Prime Minister Gaston Browne issued a heartfelt statement, expressing the nation’s sorrow over the passing of the talented athlete, highlighting how his loss robs society of his potential contributions to nation-building.
In his statement, Browne emphasized that youth violence has become an existential threat to the Caribbean region. He pointed out that this urgent issue is weighing heavily on the minds of the youth as the government intensifies efforts to enhance initiatives focused on anti-violence and conflict resolution.
“The government cannot do it alone,” Browne stated, stressing the necessity for a collective approach. He called for action to begin at home, advocating for better parenting and stronger family structures as foundational steps in tackling youth violence.
The Prime Minister urged all sectors of society—including church leaders, educators, community figures, and parents—to unite in addressing what he described as a critical threat to the development and quality of life in the region.
“This is a crucial time in our development, in which the “village” must now take responsibility for raising each child,” he noted, extending his condolences to Bowers’ family and calling for an all-encompassing societal effort to bring about real change.
The tragic loss of Vonde Bowers serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing youth in the Caribbean, underscoring the need for a united front in the fight against violence and its impacts on future generations.
Prime Minister Browne’s full statement is below:
“We are all saddened by the untimely passing of this talented young man, robbing our society of his contribution to nation building.
The issue of youth violence is now an existential threat facing the Caribbean region.
This is a matter occupying the attention of our government, as we seek to enhance our anti violence and conflict resolution initiatives.
However, the government cannot do it alone.
These interventions need to start within our homes, with better parenting, to create stronger and more wholesome families.
In fact, an all of society approach is required to address this threat effectively.
This is a crucial time in our development, in which the “village”must now take responsibility for raising each child.
Our church leaders, teachers, community leaders, parents; all stakeholders are required to play their role in resolving this threat to our development and quality of life.
I extend condolences to the family of the deceased.”

We certainly are not immune to youth crime and violence, and you are right this fight is not restricted to just the government. It involves us all
Parents need to be taught skills on how to raise their children, it’s not an easy job raising children. Children need to be taught tolerance and conflict resolution skills.
While the PM addresses youth violence, we must move beyond simply identifying the problem. What preventative programs are being scaled up? How are we creating genuine opportunities and mentorship for our vulnerable youth? That’s where real change begins.
I just want to say that it’s really great to see Prime Minister Gaston Browne taking a strong stand against youth violence, especially in light of Vonde Bowers’ tragic passing. It’sad for all of us but we know that the government is focusing on initiatives that can help us, the youth, create a better future. It is just that these young people aint embrassing it. We need to break the cycle of violence and work towards building a safer community. We need a national symposium…we need more help.

What measures will you Prime Minister take to curve youth violence? It’s been too much lately and their must something to put an end to it.
These youths need extra curricular activities. We don’t want to hear your statement pm. We want you to make changes. Let see a change
I watched him play in Leicester, UK just a couple weeks back! This is so shocking!! Bad mind and jealousy has to be the reason behind this! These youths don’t have no fear! Condolences to his family. So sad to hear!
